Magnets find an incredibly broad range of uses in our everyday lives. The uses of magnets stem from very old applications (compass needles) to very modern ones(magnetic resonance imaging, materials for information technology). Most magnets are based exclusively on metals; however, in recent years there has been a tremendous interest in the design and creation of magnets based on fundamentally different (non-metallic)materials. This is a formidable challenge, but a worthwhile one for both basic research and for the potential technological applications that may arise from new magnetic materials. The goals of the research presented in this proposal are to explore new molecules that may be useful "building blocks" for a new generation of magnets. The fundamental properties of these molecules will be studied, and methods of assembling the "building blocks" into materials with new and unusual magnetic properties are proposed. The magnetic properties of these materials will be explored using a wide range of techniques. By comparing properties to the structures of these materials, this research may ultimately lead to the prodution of materials with iproved magnetic properties or completely new properties altogether.
