Landfills can continue to produce methane and leachate for decades or even centuries after closure, particular in semi-arid climates such as the Canadian Prairies.  Rapid stabilization of old municipal landfill sites will enable municipalities to reduce long term costs and avoid potential environmental problems in the future.  Rapid stabilization does present challenges associated with moisture and gas movement in the waste, clogging of drainage systems and landfill stability.   In short, the intent will be to bring together the geotechnical aspects of landfill engineering with those relating to waste and leachate biostabilization, and the biogeochemical processes related to clogging of filters and drainage systems.  Discovery Grant funds will provide resources for specific aspects of the overall effort that represent important technical/scientific challenges for long-term development and application of these technologies, but which do not represent immediate priorities for funding by the municipal owners.  Discovery Grant funds will be used strategically to generate the biggest bang for the buck, given that the City will have paid for all of the boreholes and downhole instrumentation and gas wells etc etc.
