The long-term objective of my research program is to understand the basic physiological mechanisms that regulate blood flow to skeletal muscles at rest and during physiological stress. The maintenance of arterial blood pressure and optimization of skeletal muscle blood flow is dependent upon a dynamic balance between constrictor (that tend to decrease blood flow) and dilator (that tend to increase blood flow) signals that are integrated in the smooth muscle of blood vessels that perfuse skeletal muscles.
