Recently, compact efficient RGB (red, green, blue) lasers have attracted much attention due to the strong demand in the fields of bio-instrumentation and laser projection. Rapid growth in the biotechnology instrumentation market is creating unexpected applications such as in DNA and cell analysis. The market for lasers used in bio-instrumentation applications is estimated to be in excess of $470 millions for 2007 according to a market forecast by Laser Focus World, 2006. It is estimated that the market of lasers for these applications will reach about US$1 billion in 2012. In the field of laser projection, compact red, green, blue (RGB) lasers with an output power from several milliwatts to watts are required. However, green semiconductor laser diodes (LDs) are not available due to the lack of suitable materials, and output power from the available blue LDs are not sufficient and beam shape from the available red LDs are not good enough for laser projection. According to Insight Media, the total laser display market will reach US$2.5 billion in 2012.
