The goal of this proposal is to develop a prototype speckle-free true red-blue-green (RGB) laser projector for educational use. The development of a true RGB laser projector will improve the overall image quality by dramatically increasing brightness and contrast, while enhancing colour gamut. Until now, laser speckling has been one of the major obstacles for the creation of laser projectors. However, we have developed a patent-pending novel speckle reduction technique that can reduce laser speckle contrast ratio (SCR) below the perception level of human eye (i.e. <5%), lifting the barrier to this lucrative market.**The objectives of the proposed project are to develop prototypes of speckle-free RGB laser modules suitable for education projectors, to retrofit a lamp based education projector with RGB laser light engine, and to demonstrate feasibility of the developed speckle-free RGB laser projector in an educational setting. These improvements are particularly valuable to classrooms with strong ambient light, in which higher brightness, improved contrast and better colour are crucial. In consultation with the end users (McMaster Campus Classroom Technologies), we have determined a set of design and performance criteria that must be met in order to make this technology commercially viable. For education projectors described above, a speckle-free RGB laser projector will need to have a SCR <5%, and a brightness >5000 lm. The RGB laser module will need to cost much less than the typical lifetime maintenance cost of a lamp projector (about $9000 parts & labour cost over 10 years at McMaster) in order to be competitive against existing lamp-based projectors on the market.
