The goal of this project is to develop compact efficient diode pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers for bio-instrument illumination and online environmental monitoring. The developed bio-instrument illumination lasers will emit light at a wavelength of 561 nm (yellow colour) and have ~5 W output power, while the developed online environmental monitoring lasers will emit light with wavelengths at mid-infrared (mid-IR) (~3400 nm). The yellow laser will be used for illumination in bio-instrument by increasing the intensity of the output light with only desired wavelength. The mid-IR laser will be used for detection of methane gas, one of the most harmful green house gases (GHG) that contribute significantly to climate change. Development of these lasers will give Canadian companies a competitive edge in the Canadian and worldwide market by allowing them to not only improve their existing products but create ones that currently do not exist.The development of yellow lasers will lead to an immediate improvement in bio-illumination technology which will directly impact Canadians by providing improved medical equipment and thus higher-quality healthcare. The development of online environmental monitoring lasers will enable wide detection of GHG emission, which will help to preserve the environment and help Canada become a leader in climate action that it wants to be. It is expected that Canadian companies will benefit significantly from the success development of the proposed lasers.
