Ultracentrifugation involves the separation of different sized particles by very high centrifugal forces. This technique is fundamental to modern biology and requires a dedicated machine capable of achieving such high forces. Most laboratories in the fields of cell biology and biochemistry use this technique routinely and these machines are in very high demand. Tabletop ultracentrifuges are specifically designed to separate small samples and achieve remarkably high separation forces. We previously had a tabletop ultracentrifuge but this machine was more than 15 years old and is now obsolete. During its last breakdown the service representative indicated that the parts were no longer available for its repair and that it would need to be replaced. Our group of investigators is currently traveling to other buildings to perform ultracentrifugation, but the problem associated with this is not only the travel time and the difficulty booking time on other people's equipment. The major problems are that samples can be degraded if not used promptly after separation, and in some cases the materials that were separated can become remixed during travel. The current application is therefore to seek a replacement for this machine that can be housed in space central to our laboratories.
