Fluorescence spectrophotometer

This proposal is to request funding for the purchase of a fluorescence spectrophotometer equipped with a multicell Peltier and a microplate reader. This instrument will be used for a variety of research projects that require routine access to a sensitive fluorescence spectrophotometer. These include studies on the interaction of bovine lactoferricin, the development of novel cytolytic antimicrobial peptides and the development of unique detection systems for identifying relevant biological analytes of interest. There is currently only one research-grade fluorescent spectrophotometer in the Department of Chemistry at Université Laval, an instrument acquired in 2001 with CFI funds from M. Leclerc's Canada Research Chair. The needs for that instrument in M. Leclerc's group require a full time use of that instrument. Other users at Laval, from the groups of the applicants, are occasionally (2-3% of the time) graciously granted access to the instrument by the Leclerc group. However, the increased demand for fluorescence spectrophotometry by the new research activities in several projects by the applicant groups warrant the acquisition of a sensitive fluorescent spectrophotometer. The progress of several projects described in the application is severely impeded by the lack of regular access to such an instrument.
