The applicants are requesting an Ultraviolet/Visible wavelength spectrophotometer that provides rapid wavelength scanning and fluorescence detection capability, temperature control for kinetic experiments, and mixing for samples containing particulates. The need and timing of the application are critical as the present instrument is obsolete and failing, and cannot be repaired because the parts are no longer available. There is no other instrument in our labs, that if it were to fail, would have a more negative impact on our ability to provide graduate student training, and to advance our respective research areas. The need is critical, the instrument is central to our research training, and the sharing of the instrument between our labs will ensure that it will be used widely in the training of high quality personal. Students and researchers will be trained in spectrophotometric detection and analytical techniques, the use of fluorescent markers to track organic molecules, enzyme labeled antibody detection techniques, chemical and enzymatic kinetic assays, and in the development of in situ methods to quantify biomolecules embedded in particulates. The decision around the specific instrument was based on positive vendor experience, strong record of technical support, fluorescence capability, and the ability to mix and control temperature of small volume samples during analysis for kinetic measurements and for particulate systems. The applicants provide graduate training in biomedically-based research, involving controlled delivery of biopharmaceuticals, development of new biomaterials, and tissue engineering. The spectrophotometer is central to all of these areas of research and will most certainly be used in the training of all of our graduate students and researchers.
