Fiber Bragg gratings are optical filters that can be imprinted in the core of optical fibers by exposure to UV laser radiation. These components find many applications in the fields of optical communications, lasers and sensors. The success of this technology lies in the ability to tailor the filter spectral response during the fabrication process. The expertise of the Canada Research Chair in Optical fiber communications and components in the field of fiber Bragg grating technology is recognized internationally. Prof. LaRochelle and her team have performed research in the fundamentals and applications of these filters by developing elaborate simulation tools, optimizing fabrication techniques and proposing novel devices. The ability to fabricate and characterize such elaborate filters is a cornerstone of the chair's research program in the field of optical communications. The fiber Bragg grating writing facility provides great flexibility in the implementation of new strategies for access or long haul networks and enables innovative research in a timely manner. The requested equipment consists of replacement parts for the frequency-doubled Argon ion laser, i.e. laser tube, doubling crystal, mirrors and lenses. This writing facility is essential to carry out the experimental research of several on-going projects that also involve collaborators in Canadian Universities and abroad. The fiber Bragg grating writing facility contributes to the direct training of more than ten graduate students each year.
