Fat, in adipose tissue, is an essential component of energy storage and in fact is the major source of body energy available. Too much or too little fat (in animals and humans) can alter normal physiology resulting in disruptions in many physiological processes. excess fat tissue leads to changed whole-body glucose metabolism while fat depots in other tissues, such as liver, pancreas, muscle and kidneys can disrupt their normal function and cause altered immune regulation. Conversely, too little fat can lead to fertility problems, abnormal insulin action, altered immune function, changes in migration (birds), spawning (fish) and hibernation (mammals).
