Known as the El Niño of the Atlantic, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant climate mode that affects eastern North America and Western Europe. Characterized by fluctuations in pressure within the Icelandic Low and the Azores High, the NAO is responsible for periods of extreme cold and high precipitation, as well as drought and heat waves.
