Soil respiration is a major pathway of carbon transfer between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, and as such, is an integral part of the global carbon cycle. Measurements of total soil respiration coupled with isotopic analyses of the evolved carbon dioxide have become a valuable tool in environmental studies to differentiate between sources and to follow carbon fluxes through ecosystems. The upgrade of our current gas chromatograph as requested in this proposal will complete our existing laboratory facility to allow analysis of respired carbon dioxide for process-based research in the area of:
