During its lifetime, a cell duplicates its chromosomes, organizes its cytoskeleton to change shape or to move, forms a mitotic spindle that segregates chromosomes, and ultimately cleaves to form two new daughter cells. We know a great deal about the general features of these processes. Each of these processes is composed of a series of steps, and some steps are completely very quickly- in a few minutes or seconds. The detection and analysis of the rapid steps is a huge challenge to scientists, and limits our understanding of how a process is completely accurately, or why it fails. Understanding each step frequently requires the detection of two or more of the working molecules needed for each step in the process. The equipment requested will allow our microscope to capture the rapid changes in activity or movement of two or more molecules at the same time. In this way we gain deeper understanding of the processes that are common to all cells.
