This grant application is requesting fund to obtain an atomic force microscope (AFM). The goal of this program is to bridge material sciences to technological development through the mapping of phase morphology of heterogeneous material systems and surface topology of various fabricated parts to their multifunctional properties (i.e., mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties). The ability to tailor these properties is crucial in a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from daily commodities (e.g., electronic packaging) to advanced applications (e.g., bioscaffold and fuel cells). This will have a substantial impact on the manufacturing, health and energy sectors.
