INSTRUMENT & RESEARCH PROGRAM. Research on materials, interfaces, electrocatalysis, photovoltaics, and aqueous corrosion conducted in the groups of Jerkiewicz, Nunzi, Beauchemin and Lessard requires an advanced potentiostat with a compatible quartz-crystal nanobalance. The requested instrumentation will create complementary experimental capabilities and accelerate a variety of fundamental and applied research projects. The equipment will be used to study the following: (i) mechanism and kinetics of the growth of oxides; (ii) electro-dissolution of Pt-based electrocatalysts in media that mimic the operating condition of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells; (iii) electro-oxidation of methanol and ethanol; (iv) electrochemical growth of nanoscopic metallic (Ag, Cu) layers; (v) mechanism and kinetics of H electro-adsorption and H2(g) electrolytic generation; (vi) mechanism and kinetics of electrocatalytic hydrogenation of achiral/prochiral organic compounds at achiral/chiral electrode surfaces; (vii) thermodynamics of UPD of Ag and Cu layers at Pt, Au, and Rh electrodes; and (vii) electrochemical growth of Au and Au-based nanoscopic rods for photovoltaics. Electrochemistry and nanogravimetric data will be supplemented by results obtained using surface science (XPS, AES, STM, AFM), materials science (SEM, TEM, FIB) and analytical (ICP-MS) techniques.
