The Departmental X-ray Diffractometer is a Bruker instrument purchased in 1997. Departmental Crystallographer Dr Alan Lough runs this instrument, mounts crystals supplied by 14 research groups in the Department of Chemistry and from other Universities in Canada and around the world and solves their structures, about 300 per year. The mechanical parts of the diffractometer are starting to wear and the detector and software are obsolete. This is a proposal to replace the diffractometer with a modern, more productive and sensitive one in order to increase efficiency and quality of the molecular structures determined. The X-ray source is currently molybdenum. This proposal requests a copper source since there is increased demand to determine the absolute configuration of enantiopure organic compounds targetted to drug and other fine chemical applications.
