Animal nervous systems are the most complex, computationally powerful objects in the known universe. To explain how that complexity arose as a result of changes at the molecular level is a major challenge for the theory of Darwinian evolution. Only recently, with the availability of multiple diverse metazoan genome sequences and a growing understanding of the function of key nervous system proteins, have we been able to take initial steps towards a description of how the molecular parts that make up the nervous system came to be. I propose to exploit these resources to begin to develop a model of when and how the ion channel neurotransmitter receptors that are central to fast neurotransmission in all metazoa evolved.
