The aerodynamics of helicopters is unique in that they feature phenomena not seen in any other applications. These include the presence of a persistent helical tip vortex, the interaction of this tip vortex with the other blades (Blade-Vortex Interaction), the occurrence of shock waves on the advancing blades, or dynamic stall on the retreating ones. All these phenomena occur in each revolution and are the source of severe vibration and noise, the reduction of which has become the main focus of the helicopter industry recently.
