英文摘要
For the past 15 years, the phenomenon of quantum entanglement has come to play an increasingly important role in a number of fields in physics. Driven largely by the potential impact this effect may have in communications and information processing, wide-ranging investigations into the nature of entanglement, and into how entanglement can be created, preserved, and exploited in the laboratory have been undertaken with considerable success. While practical quantum information processing remains a tantalizing and inspiring vision, we propose in this project to investigate the possibility of more short-term practical applications of entanglement. Rather than awaiting the development of complex and challenging technologies from the current prototypes into scalable, practical devices (a process which may yet take decades, at least as far as quantum computing is concerned), the applications we propose to investigate will grow out of the already demonstrated capabilities of systems, thereby leveraging the expertise built up.
