Due to the demand of high power industrial process, high power (500hp to 10,000hp) medium voltage (2.3kV to 13.8kV) motor drive is becoming one of the most active research areas in both power electronics and motor industries. In high power motor drives, the converter device switching frequency used is usually a few hundred Hertz due to the concern on the converter switching losses. This low switching frequency will cause line current distortions and dc link current or voltage ripples, which further increases the line side and motor side harmonic distortions. Traditional approach to deal with the harmonics and ripples is to add passive filtering components, which increases the cost, size and weight of a drive system.
