Energy diversity is quickly becoming a necessity for our society and will lead to significant changes to our everyday lives. One predicted change is the development and integration of electric vehicles into the North American transportation industry. Currently, engineers and scientists are working to make this prediction a reality. This proposal provides a significant piece of the puzzle that will increase the ability of engineers to design robust electric vehicles that will have significant and sustainably market penetration and a beneficial impact on our society. The academic and industry team will develop a new understanding of the connection between the chemistry and structure of non-oriented electrical steel and the magnetic performance of this material. Non-oriented electrical steel is at the heart of the electric motor, which needs to be pushed beyond the current levels of performance. Understanding the limitations of the materials currently used and including this understanding in a model to predict magnetic performance will allow for engineers to further optimize materials and the engineering design to make the next generation of electric motors high performance, robust, reliable and a reality for electric vehicles of the future.
