A fundamental challenge for contemporary neuroscience is to address how the properties of neurons relate to specific behaviors and physiological processes. To address this question, one must systematically examine a range of functional properties of neurons, including their shape, gene expression, connectivity, electrophysiology, and finally their role in behavior. This becomes particularly valuable when the objective is to address the dynamic changes of the nerve system in injury and disease.
