Electric vehicles (EVs) are anticipated to have major impacts on society, reducing both pollutant emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. For major adoption of EVs, the necessary infrastructure to provide re-charging of the on-board batteries will need to be developed. The requirement of plugging in vehicles to charge their batteries at "charging stations" on a frequent basis presents one obstacle to EV adoption - the need for a significant change in user behaviour from current practices with automobiles. In addition, the required plug-in cord can present an undesirable inconvenience, has real and perceived safety risks associated with its use, and is an item subject to theft and vandalism.
