There is currently a significant challenge in the lighting industry to reduce electrical energy use while also delivering high quality illumination. It is well known that improved energy efficiency can be achieved by altering the spectral power distribution of electric light sources, but this often leads to an unacceptable reduction in the perceived lighting quality. The spectral power distribution that offers the optimal compromise between energy use and human well-being is not known, since the human perception data is missing, and this data is missing largely because there does not exist a light source that makes it possible to present project participants with different spectral power distributions.
