There is currently tremendous interest in daylighting multi-floor buildings, both to reduce electrical energy consumption by electric lights and to improve the quality of workplace illumination. For widespread adoption, it is critical that the system has a short economic payback time based on the resulting energy savings, and that it is highly compatible with standard building construction practices. There are a number of previous approaches that are capable of providing daylight in a range of situations, but they all have fundamental limitations and do not achieve these goals, and consequently they have not been widely adopted.
