The proposed research involves the development of MEMS based force-torque sensors, for use in robotic surgery for in-bore magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In-bore surgical robotics are being investigated by clinicians due to the benefits of having intra-operative MRI and surgical actions to follow each other closely. Difficulties exist, however, due to particular constraints of surgical procedures and imaging technologies. Examples include line-of sight issues, MR compatibility of tools, and loss of tactile information. Consequently, robotic technologies have not yet adopted sensorized tools. Development and integration of MR compatible force-torque sensors into robotic tools is required.
