Proteins play critical roles in all physiological and biochemical processes that occur within animals and cells. This includes the regulation of tissue growth, the structure and function of nerves and the processes involved in causing infection of the lungs. Complicating the study of cellular proteins is that cells contain thousands of different proteins and each of these can have multiple roles. To determine which proteins are involved in a specific process requires tools that can identify individual proteins and then characterize how they function in a cell. The requested equipment enables all proteins within a cell to be identified and for the interactions between different proteins to be characterized. For example this instrument will help identify the proteins that are involved in regulating how the heart responds to stress and the changes in its structure and function that result. This has application in understanding how the human heart remodels during heart failure and in the development of treatments to help reduce the effect of these changes. Each of the individuals in the team of applicants investigates an aspect of cellular biology that has broad application. This includes studying the proteins involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple scleroses, how cells and animals respond to environmental or physical stress, the mechanism by which human lungs are infected during the development of cystic fibrosis, and the discovery of new and powerful antibiotics. This instrument will allow the work of these researchers to be more efficient and enable them to complete a variety of studies that would not be otherwise possible. As a result this instrument will enable these researchers to make significant progress in their fields and enable discoveries that will have application in the development of new treatments for a variety of conditions that affect the health of Canadians. In addition, this instrument will be critical to training new scientists who will develop skills that are in significant demand in a variety of biomedical fields including drug discovery, cardiovascular biology and disease transmission.
