"Platform for Transportation Data Archiving, Processing, Analysis and Visualization"

This grant application is addressed to NSERC with the objective of acquiring high performance database and computing servers. They will be used to provide the necessary computing power and storage capacity to get access to transportation data from partners and allow its archiving, processing, analysis and visualization for several applications in transportation and related fields. This equipment will be integrated into the computing network of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (CIRRELT). Although the Centre has ongoing collaborations and research projects with many stakeholders in the field of transportation in Québec, in particular public administration and agencies such as the Québec Ministry of Transportation, the City of Montréal, the "Société de Transport de Montréal", it does not have a direct electronic link to their data sources, nor the computing resources to deal with this data. The goal of this proposal is to buy the necessary computing equipment to be able to archive transportation data from partners, make this data available to the researchers for their respective projects and permit the development of new software applications on this integrated platform. More and more sensors are attached to people, goods, vehicles (private, transit and commercial) and the infrastructure, and continuously generate gigantic amounts of data in a phenomenon that has become recently known as "big data". Such large amounts of data are a challenge and an opportunity: computational tools are required to make sense of large and ever-expanding datasets and solve today's complex transportation problems. The requested equipment will make this possible by providing CIRRELT researchers direct, systematic and organized access to transportation data currently unavailable, unsaved or locked in data warehouses.
