High resolution, accurate mass measurement of an ion characteristic of molecular weight is a powerful and necessary tool for the determination of the elemental composition of new and unique organic compounds. Researchers involved in the areas of new materials synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biological chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry all require measurement of molecular mass of compounds that they make. The importance of determining the proper mass of a new molecule is quintessential to validation of the chemical structure of the newly made compound. The impact of this technique allows chemists to properly make and use new compounds that can positively impact the world around us such as in the development of new materials useful in advanced electronics, computers, and diagnostic devices as well as new drugs that treat disease.
