Canadian forests are in constant need of protection from pests and one of the key methods for providing this is through aerial spray programs. In order to mitigate environmental side effects green biopesticides have been developed (with on-going development of new variants) and are delivered from the air from an aircraft using a spray system. Due to the high cost of these new biopesticides it is important that the product reach its forest target with little loss to nearby off-target zones. The present research is aimed at applying advanced high-performance computing based simulation tools to the problem of biopesticide droplet release from the aircraft until its final destination on the ground. The simulations rely on supercomputers and aerodynamics based mathematical models that provide greater resolution than the current (1970's based) models used to assist in targeting the biopesticides. It is envisioned that the new simulation approach applied in this research will replace components of the current targeting methods. The improved ability to target biopesticides will encourage the full adoption of such products in forest protection settings.
