New x-ray radiographic systems based on amorphous silicon digital flat panel technology have revolutionized our capability of producing digital x-ray radiographic images. In this research project, we plan to develop a new generation of high resolution, low noise, digital X-ray imagers based on widely available crystalline silicon CMOS technology for high resolution, high energy medical imaging applications such as micro-computed tomography for pre-clinical imaging. This project is being carried out in collaboration with DALSA, a Canadian company that is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario. The research will involve the training of future engineers in the photonics, manufacturing, and information technology industries. Such highly skilled personnel are essential to maintain Canada's technological advantage in the biomedical devices field.
