MRI upgrades to enable rodent and human research

This application is for essential equipment to enable the non invasive magnetic resonance imaging projects by the fifteen NSERC funded neuroscientists at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Lethbridge. The research involves non human and human participants and spans a wide range of high impact research topics, from prenatal brain development, recovery after injury, to age-related cognitive decline, focusing on skilled movements, attention, social behaviour, memory and decision-making. We apply several MR modalities, including quantitative structural brain and placental images, fMRI, MR spectroscopy and manganese-enhanced MRI. We currently have two magnets, one 3T human and one 4.7T non human, with obsolete or moribund electronics, accessories and consoles. In order to enable this research to proceed we are requesting funding for the minimally necessary items, a new console, electronics, coils and cryostat (for sectioning tissue post-imaging).
