Infrared imaging camera for volcanology and hydrology

We request funding for a thermal infrared camera to measure active volcanoes, study glacial-groundwater systems, and characterize hydrologic fluxes in cold environments. These applications are deliberately diverse in their nature to maximize this instrument's utilization and its remarkable potential for earth science and engineering applications. The camera will be able to measure temperatures from -40 to 2000°C. The camera will be able to image still scenes, take thermal infrared videos, and do time-lapse thermal infrared photography. The camera is designed for both field use and laboratory use. The applicants conduct field research, so this camera is ideal since it is designed for extreme field conditions. Equally useful is applying the camera in the applicants' respective laboratories for controlled experiments. These capabilities will allow us to advance our respective research in new directions.
