Development of sustainable power technologies and protection of Earth's climate have become the goals of extensive international multidisciplinary research efforts. It is evident, that a major redesign of technological systems is necessary to achieve these goals. For example, the weight of automobiles must be reduced to enhance fuel economy and reduce production of greenhouse gases. Similarly, development of alternative power generation systems is necessary to replace polluting fossil fuel powerplants. However, these technology transformations hinge on the availability of novel materials that are lighter, stronger and resistant to withstand harsher environments (temperature / pressure / corrosion) than currently available materials.
