英文摘要
In most mechanical systems, vibrations are considered detrimental. Excessive vibration causes part fatigue and machine failure. Uncontrolled vibration results in discomfort in automobiles, trains, and airplanes, etc. Slight vibration makes operation of precision devices such as optical instruments impossible. Vibration control is very important for modern machines. Vibration control methods can be classified as passive, semi-active and active. Passive vibration control is effective if operation conditions remain unchanged. To make vibration control systems adaptable to varying conditions, semi-active or active control must be employed. Over the last six years, the applicant, his graduate students, and collaborators have made a significant progress in semi-active and active vibration control. In particular, two novel vibration isolators were developed and applied to single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. In order to apply the developed vibration isolators to real mechanical systems, it is imperative to extend the study to multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems. For this proposed research program, the applicant intends to accomplish three short-term objectives. (1) Apply the developed tunable HSLDS vibration isolator to MDOF systems. Investigate the dynamic behaviors of the combined systems. Develop effective tuning methods. (2) Apply the developed active vibration isolator to MDOF systems. Investigate the dynamic behaviors of the combined systems. Develop effective control methods. (3) Improve the design of the developed semi-active/active vibration isolators. Develop new vibration control devices. The applicant's long-term objectives are to apply the research results in relevant industries and contribute to the knowledge of vibration control of complex mechanical systems. The outcomes of the proposed study are novel vibration control devices and methodologies that can be directly applied to vibration isolation. The study is driven both by academic interests and industrial needs. Academically, new knowledge and techniques will be gained. Practically, potential applications will be produced. The proposed research will provide excellent opportunities for the training of HQP.
