The immediate objective of the proposed Engage grant application is to develop novel copper coatings to advance current biomaterials by endowing them with the ability to managing the cellular events that ultimately determine the biological outcome of biomedical implants. In particular, we propose to assess the cytotoxicity and the biological properties of various electrodeposited copper coatings provided by the industrial partner, Integran Technologies Inc. In addition, by exploiting nanotechnology-based approaches we plan on simultaneously providing these copper coatings with enhanced biological properties and a better corrosion resistance. Results from this exploratory project will validate the potential of copper coatings as a valuable alternative strategy to improve the integration of biomaterials.
