In vitro practices must overcome important challenges to compare favourably with in vivo human studies. The poor prediction and limited applicability of current in vitro assays and strategies can be explained by the fact that standard approaches do not enable recapitulation of the complexity of human tissues and physiological functions. In the case of existing neuronal cell culture systems, a major downside is that the 2D cell environment unrealistically flattens soma and growth cones, limits axon-dendrite outgrowth, and lacks many other constituents of a realistic in vivo environment.**The Engage program will permit development of 3D culture-based methods for neuronal cells. Results from this study are poised to build the scientific foundation that will ultimately allow our industrial partner, QBM Cell Science, to implement 3D cultures in their R&D protocols, allowing the company to transition to more physiologically accurate cell culture systems.**
