Our company sponsor, Country Bait, has developed alternative bedding for shipping dew worms (Lumbricus terrestris) that are sold as bait. This bedding (Ecobedding), which is primarily composed of ground cardboard, is cleaner and more environmentally-friendly than the peat moss that is traditionally used. During the development of Ecobedding the company has solved many of the initial problems associated with using a cardboard based-bedding and now has a recipe with a 96% survival rate. The cause of the 4% mortality is unknown, but often all the mortality occurs in a one or two out of the containers packaged and shipped together. Survivability must be 100% to prevent spoiled fishing trips and for Eco Bedding to be a competitive salable product.
