Function of cytochrome P450 enzymes in aquatic species

Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) are crucial for the production and metabolism of hormones. CYPs are also critical for defense; they metabolize environmental contaminants and most drugs. CYP1 enzymes metabolize estradiol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polycylic aromatic amines; important for both estrogen regulation and defense. The complete genomes from several aquatic species has provided details regarding the development and diversity of CYP genes in animals. Yet, we don't know the function of the novel CYP enzymes and function cannot be determined based on mammalian studies. Determining function is limited by the lack of a general assay for CYP function. The objectives of the research are to determine function of novel CYP genes in aquatic species, focusing on the CYP 1 family.
