One approach for studying an affine algebraic variety X over the complex numbers C consists in describing the algebraic actions of the algebraic group G_a = (C,+) on X (in short, the G_a - actions on X). This method developed rapidly over the last 15 years, and is now one of the central themes in Affine Algebraic Geometry.
