The proposed research program concerns the development and application of models for permeable porous materials using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Porous materials exist in almost everything around us, from bone and tissue, to clothing and foods, to soils and minerals, and materials of all kinds, whether naturally occurring or manufactured. As such, our understanding of processes like water and air filtration, energy and moisture exchange, and our ability to utilize the unique properties of porous materials to develop devices like fuel cells, heat pipes and highly-efficient energy capture/recovery devices relies on our understanding of how these porous materials function under different conditions and in different environments. CFD is a continually emerging and growing technology that has seen widespread application in industrial, environmental and physiological domains.
