The proposed research program concerns the development and application of computer models for simulating systems that capture and store energy from sources such as solar and remediated waste. The central theme of the proposed research program is the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling capabilities to enable exploration into unique applications. CFD is a continually emerging and growing technology that is now used to predict the motion and evolution of weather systems, to study flows in physiological systems, and to explore and develop technologies for energy transfer and storage, among numerous other applications. More widespread application is enabled by the development of modelling capabilities, which can include discretization techniques, algorithmic improvements and extended capabilities in the modelling of physics. The research proposed in this program targets the development and use of computational capabilities that will enable exploration of physical processes and development of new technologies, thus extending the boundaries of CFD application, while providing an excellent training environment for undergraduate and graduate research students at all levels.
