Science and engineering have no doubt benefited from advancements in information technology over the last few decades. Scientific computations have allowed for the simulation and modeling of physical processes that would have been difficult to study otherwise. However, due to the nature of the intense calculations present in biomedical applications, the simulations are demanding in both time and energy on computing resources. For example, in computational biochemistry the study of simple molecular interactions for drug development can take days or even weeks to simulate on state-of-the-art computing platforms.
