There is increasing concern about the accelerating pace of biodiversity losses in Canada and around the world because we value living organisms but also because biodiversity losses may have negative impacts on natural ecosystems, which provide services such as clean water, absorbing excess carbon dioxide, filtering harmful contaminants and supporting important crop pollinators. This concern is heightened by predicted climatic changes that are likely to have unanticipated impacts on plant and animal diversity and the services they provide. Thus, it is essential to understand the natural and manmade causes of fluctuations in species richness and how those changes will impact important ecosystem services.
