Marine and surface transportaion of hazardous materials

Hazardous Materials (hazmat) -an integral part of our industrial lifestyle -are often transported in significant volumes. For example, oil extracted from oil fields is sent to refineries for processing, and then transported to different parts of the world for storage and consumption. According to the most recent study conducted by the Dangerous Goods Directorate at Transport Canada, 86% of the nearly 80,000 daily domestic (non-bulk) hazmat shipments are moved by surface transportation modes (viz., railroad and trucks), while marine is the predominant mode for transporting bulk commodities (such as oil). The goal of this research program is to develop assessment methodologies, analytical approaches and solution techniques to facilitate planning of and mitigating risk from transportation of hazmat. Although most of the projects will be based on marine transportation, we also intend to build on our works in the railroad and intermodal domain to solve more complex problems.
