Vital functions of human life are performed by small molecules that transform chemical energy into mechanical work. These so-called molecular motors are responsible for transport, division and motility inside the cells. One of these molecular motors is myosin, which is present in muscles and is responsible for contraction and force production. The coordinated action of many myosin molecules results in muscle contraction. Consequently, the magnitude of the movements induced by myosin molecules is directly associated with the force produced by the muscles. The current project seeks to use new, cutting-edge technologies to evaluate the mechanisms by which these molecules use chemical energy to perform their work. This research has far-reaching implications, as understanding the molecular mechanisms of contraction is mandatory to understand the molecular mechanisms of musculoskeletal function.
