Polymer composites have been widely used in many areas, including aeronautics, transportation, construction, medical devices, sporting equipment and electrical engineering. Several new types of nanoparticles have been created over the past decade and their synthesis must be optimized to have the most ideal properties. One of the major uses for these nanoparticles has been incorporation into polymer matrices. We are creating new nanowire materials made of metals like Copper and Silver. We will optimize synthesis via a novel AC electrodeposition method. These nanowires in turn will be mixed into a polymer matrix using specialized small melt mixers (1-2g scale) These materials will be analyzed and tested for new applications. There is significant potential for electronics, military, medical, and automotive sectors, especially for electromagnetic radiation shielding applications such as cell phones and laptop enclosures.
