Work done by Endurance Gold Corporation on their Bandito property in the eastern Yukon from 2010 to 2012 showed significant quantities of rare earth elements (REE) and niobium (Nb) over a 9 km2 area. Rare earth elements are essential for the green economy (e.g., high strength magnets for electric and hybrid cars and wind turbines; alloys for fuel cells; water treatment) and the microelectronics industry. The heavy REEs (europium to lutetium) are particularly valuable because of their unique applications and relative scarcity. Niobium is also used in microelectronics but also to make superconducting magnets (e.g. for magnetic resonance imaging) and special steels and alloys.
