Across the global, companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon are installing large warehouse-scale computing systems known as datacenters. These datacenters represent a substantial capital investment by companies and require significant cost and energy to maintain. With the tremendous growth of web-based services such as search, social networking, gaming, banking, etc, there is a growing and critical need for infrastructure to build scalable, high-performance, energy-efficient, cost-effective datacenters. The interconnection network within the datacenter represents a critical cost component and has a significant impact on the performance. The interconnection network facilitates the transfer of requests to servers and supplies the data required by those requests. This project will explore the use of direct interconnect architectures for datacenters. These direct interconnect architectures have proven successful in supercomputers and avoid many of the overheads associated with Ethernet-based networks that are commonplace in today's datacenters.
